Since joining Bindi Inc in the early 80’s, Billy Benn Perrurle had been painting his father’s country, working from his memory to create a visual map of country that he has not seen since a boy.
I look back with my spirit and see the land before man… Billy Benn Perrurle
Billy Benn’s paintings celebrate the land and his knowledge of it. This country that he paints holds a special place, being the country of his birthplace. Having moved away from his birth country, he painted it from memory. In his way, he kept his home close to his heart by painting every part of it:
he wanted to paint every hill from his country and then he stopped, he would return home.
“The Alice Prize 2006 was awarded to Billy Benn Perrurle for his painting ‘Artetyerre 2006’, which is a brilliant and powerful portrayal of the artist’s country of Harts Range, where the distinctive shapes of the land are evocatively represented by swathes of lyrical colour and expressionist brushwork. It is a work of great individuality and beauty.”
Perrurle’s central Australian landscapes possess a depth and serenity that resonate this relationship to country as the motivation and core significance of the work. Perrurle has emerged to be recognised as an artist of importance and integrity. He is represented in key national collections.
