Born in Alice Springs in 1967, Cindy Nakamarra Gibson spent her childhood growing up in Yuendumu, one of the larger remote communities in Central Australia about 293 km northwest of Alice Springs, which is the home of a thriving community of Aboriginal artists.

Cindy’s mother is Mitjili Napanangka Gibson and father is Jiti Jiti Tjapurrula (Mickey) who was one of the senior traditional owners of the land where the community of Kiwirkurra is located in the “tali” (sandhill) country of the Gibson Desert, to the south west of Lake McKay. Cindy’s uncle is Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka, was one of the first members of the Papunya Tula art movement.

Moving to Kintore in 1987, Cindy began painting at Morgan outstation in Western Australia. She then move to Alice Springs in 1997 for her children’s education, whilst also spending time with her mother and working with her father on wildlife documentaries. Cindy was also to collaborate on a number of small paintings with her mother, during Mitjili’s early years of painting. When her mother began to paint seriously, Cindy would assist behind the scenes so that Mitjili was free to just paint.

After her mother’s passing in 2010 (Mitjili was buried at Nyirripi), Cindy resumed painting in 2011.

Cindy is extremely proud of her mother achievements, with Cindy’s own works testament to the influence her mother had on her, using several of the design techniques herself.

Cindy’s traditional country is around Winparky (Mount Web), which is near Kiwirkurra, not far from the south western border of Lake Mackay (Wilkinkarra), Wilkinkarra being one of the places often depicted by her mother in her works.
