Deve Tareguci is the grandson of internationally famous Raku potter Taraivini Wati, from Nasilei village, Rewa Delta. Also known for her gift of story telling and strong cultural knowledge, Taraivini passed her gift to Deve’s father (Apenisa Bainivalu) who continues the tradition of Raku pottery.
One of four boys, Deve is the 4th oldest of 7 siblings. At the age of 9 years, Deve father taught him to paint. Deve also use to watch his grandmother creating Raku pots. Just before his grandmother died, she shook Deve’s hand and said he would become an artist.
At the age of 10, Rusiate Lali (his cousin) became a big influence and mentor. Rusiate provided Deve with painting material and inspired him to continue, as he recognised his talent. Unfortunately, painting often took a back step due to the needs of working on the farm and deep sea diving for fish. When Rusiate returned from overseas, Deve was taken under his wing as an apprentice.
Their tribal land is also connected with Mokani, Bau, Tailevu. Tailevu is one of the 14 provinces of Fiji. One of eight provinces based in Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest being Tailevu includes the districts of Bau. It is here at Mokani that both Rusiate and Deve have a painting studio and farm where they have a pineapple plantation and grow traditional root vegetables, when not painting.
