"Awelye for Bush Medicine Leaves 2002" by Abie Kemarre Loy captures with superb linearity and wonderful use of colour the different stages of the Titye leaves growth. When the plant is still young the leaves are picked; boiled with fat; and then rubbed into the skin, acting somewhat like a muscle tonic. As the leaves mature they take on many different hues, which Abie has explored here in this work.

Awelye is a distinctive art form cherished by Aboriginal women in the Utopia region. This method is not just an artistic expression but also a way of honouring their homeland and fulfilling their cultural duties. Indigenous women have practiced Awelye body painting for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest living art forms. In recent years, contemporary Aboriginal artists have brought this ancient tradition to canvas, allowing collectors and galleries to appreciate its beauty and significance.

This altyerre or dreaming of Abie’s has been passed down to her by her father; while her aunt, Rita Pwerle Loy, is responsible for ensuring that she maintains her obligations in regards to it.

Curators Note: The colours in the painting are deeper than the 1st image yet lighter than the subsequent photos.
