Product Details
Bush Melon 2005 by Minnie Pwerle (c. 1915–2006) showcases her signature linear design, characterised by bold, loose curves and circular motifs. This design echoes Awelye , the ceremonial designs traditionally painted on the breasts and bodies of women during ceremonies. The painting tells the story of the bush melon, a sweet, seasonal fruit that grows on a small plant found exclusively in Atnwengerrp, Minnie’s ancestral homeland. Once abundant and ripening in the summer months, the bush melon is now rare. Minnie and the women of her community would gather the fruit, which transitions from green to brown as it ripens, and carefully scrape out the small black seeds.

Minnie Pwerle was a senior custodian and a celebrated artist from the Utopia community, located approximately 250 kilometres northeast of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Her distinctive artistic style is renowned for its vibrant energy and profound spiritual resonance, embodying a deep connection to country and culture. Through works like Bush Melon 2005 , Minnie not only captures the visual beauty of her traditions but also ensures the stories and knowledge of her heritage endure for generations to come.
