In Aboriginal cultures, these totems are believed to have shaped the landforms and landscapes during the Creation Era, a time celebrated in various ceremonies. These totems participate in ceremonies and are featured in parables about proper conduct and hunting methods.
Bonita Nungurrayi Williams, born in Alice Springs in 1971, has spent most of her life there, with some time in Western Australia. She learned painting from her mother, an artist from Ti Tree who speaks Anmatyerre. Married with four children, Bonita's totems are the goanna and snake. However, she often paints various bush foods like witchetty grubs, honey ants, and berries, highlighting her deep cultural connections.
Bonita's artwork not only showcases the cultural significance of bush foods but also serves as a tribute to her heritage, vividly bringing the traditions and stories of her people to life. Her vibrant and meaningful paintings honour her ancestry and preserve her cultural roots.
