"Caterpillar Dreaming" by Tommy Jones Kngwarreye is a testament to the high integrity and formal style of this senior Utopia lawman and prominent artist. His work mirrors the structure of life's continuum and the ceremonies that celebrate one's place within it.

Born in 1948 at McDonald Down Station in Utopia, Tommy Jones Kngwarreye focuses his artistic efforts on the Caterpillar Dreaming, a significant narrative from his father's country. This theme represents creation stories essential to the central desert people, depicting the giant caterpillars, Yeperenye, Ntyarlke, and Utnerrengatye. According to neighbouring Arrente people, these caterpillars shaped the majestic MacDonnell Ranges east and west of Alice Springs by entering the world through gaps in the escarpment, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape.

Tommy's paintings are characterised by their use of earth-based ochre hues, including red, yellow, and black, and incorporate traditional symbols from ceremonial sand paintings and body paint designs. His technique emphasises symmetry, reflecting the spiritual order of the universe. By employing acrylic on canvas and linen, Tommy's artwork not only preserves but also shares the rich cultural heritage of his people, ensuring that these important stories and traditions are passed down to future generations.
