"Caterpillar Dreaming at Soapy Bore, Utopia" (2000) by Tommy Jones Kngwarreye is a profound depiction of the sacred relationship to country by this senior custodian and lawman from the Eastern Desert region.

Born in 1948 at McDonald Down Station in Utopia, Tommy Jones Kngwarreye's primary artistic focus is the Caterpillar Dreaming, a significant story from his father's country. This central theme symbolises creation stories vital to the central desert people, describing the giant caterpillars, Yeperenye, Ntyarlke, and Utnerrengatye. Neighbouring Arrente people believe these caterpillars formed the magnificent MacDonnell Ranges east and west of Alice Springs by entering the world through gaps in the escarpment, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape.

Tommy's artwork is distinguished by a formal painting technique using earth-based ochre hues like red, yellow, and black. His paintings incorporate traditional symbols derived from ceremonial sand paintings and body paint designs. Symmetry is a crucial element in his work, reflecting the spiritual order of the universe. Utilising acrylic on canvas and linen, Tommy's art continues to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage of his people, ensuring that these significant stories and traditions endure for future generations.
