Product Details

"Caterpillar Dreaming" by Tommy Jones Kngwarreye, a distinguished painter from Utopia, employs a formal painting technique using earth-based ochre hues such as red, yellow, and black. His work incorporates traditional symbols inspired by ceremonial sand paintings and body paint designs. Symmetry in his art reflects the spiritual order of the universe, a vital aspect of his cultural heritage.

Tommy is a senior law man from Utopia, located approximately 250km northeast of Alice Springs. He belongs to the Alyawarre language group and hails from Irrultja in the Utopia Region, Northern Territory. His preferred medium is acrylic on canvas and linen, and his primary subject is Caterpillar Dreaming.

Born in 1948 at McDonald Down Station, Utopia, Tommy is the son of Jacob Jones and Dolly Kemarre. He comes from a family of artists, including his brothers Lenny, John, and Freddie, and his sister Lily Sandover. The main story Tommy paints, originating from his father's country, is Caterpillar Dreaming. He describes it as featuring colors like black, green, and grey, resembling a witchetty grub. This creation story is significant to central desert people, with neighbouring Arrente people believing the MacDonnell Ranges were formed by giant caterpillars entering the world through gaps in the escarpment.
