Product Details

"Crocodile Dance 2005" by Freda Warlapinni is painted with natural ochre on Arches Paper, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwi people. Different dances are performed for various reasons, from spontaneous celebrations to structured ceremonial events. Dancing plays a crucial role in these ceremonies, with each Tiwi person having their own dreaming, or totem, and associated dance inherited from their father. One of Freda's totems is Yirrikipayi (Crocodile).

The Tiwi traditionally paint their bodies for ceremonies using natural earth pigments known as ochres. This tradition of mark-making forms the foundation of modern Tiwi art, where paintings are transcriptions of ceremonial body markings.

Freda Warlapinni's artworks are characterised by their vitality and exuberant energy. Though they appear spontaneous, her paintings are created with slow, careful, and deliberate strokes. Her compositions of dots, lines, and blocks of colour evolve into a minimal design, focusing on the rhythm, movement, and energy of mulypinyini (line) interspersed with her 'wildflower' (Japartinga – tree orchid), representing delicate blossoms that grow during the dry season. Her paintings also reflect the influences of the ceremonial pukumani poles painted by her father.

Freda's unique artistic style and cultural significance make her work highly collectible and appreciated worldwide.

Provenance of painting is Jilamara Arts, Melville Island
