oxholes and Wildflowers, 2008: A Blend of Tradition and Art

"Foxholes and Wildflowers, 2008" is a captivating piece by Jeannie, created during her stay with her mother's sister, Mitjili Napanangka Gibson, in Alice Springs. Typically based in Balgo with her mother, artist Sarah Daniels, Jeannie found inspiration in her auntie's presence, a vital relationship in Aboriginal culture for passing on traditional knowledge and cultural stories.

The vibrant background of this artwork features wildflowers, known for their medicinal properties. When crushed and mixed with water, these flowers serve as an ointment for burns, scabies, and other ailments. Jeannie's artistic expression also incorporates elements from a story her father, Charlie Jupurrurla Kennedy, shared with her during childhood. The story of father foxes teaching their young to hunt, dig holes, and hide is intricately woven into the piece, reflecting Jeannie's deep connection to her heritage.

The landscape depicted in the painting represents Tjikrti, near Mina Mina in the Tanami Desert, further grounding the artwork in a specific cultural and geographical context. This painting is part of a body of work showcased in Jeannie's solo exhibition in Sydney in 2008, highlighting her unique blend of tradition and creativity.
