Product Details

"Jay Creek '07" by Billy Tjampitjinpa Kenda is a captivating etching that showcases the artist's deep connection to his traditional country, Jay Creek, located in the MacDonnell Ranges, just west of Alice Springs. The piece, with an image size of 19.5 x 12 cm and paper size of 26.5 x 39 cm, is a vibrant depiction of the Western Arrernte landscape. This area, declared a permanent camp for the Aboriginal population in 1937, holds deep cultural significance for its people.

Billy Tjjampitjinpa Kenda, a member of the Pitjanjatjara and Luritja language groups, began painting at Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artist Studio in 2004. His landscapes are textured, capturing the intricate interplay between rocks and flora, evoking the beauty of the Central Desert. Inspired by his mother, Mona Okai, and grandfather, Billy brings a graphic yet calm style to his work.

In 2008, Billy expanded his artistic narrative by incorporating modern elements, like trucks, cars, and even flying saucers, interacting with traditional animals such as kangaroos and emus. His work highlights the evolving landscape of Central Australia, blending past and present in a way that is both playful and profound.

Provenance: Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artist Studio, Alice Springs, NT.
