"Jilamara 1999" by Freda Warlapinni is a captivating artwork painted with natural ochres on Arches paper. Each person in Tiwi culture has their own skin name, dreaming, and dance inherited through generations. During ceremonies, the body is adorned with geometric abstract designs known as jilamara.

Ochre is applied to the body and face in these significant artistic designs, collectively called ‘Jilamara’. These designs are worn during Tiwi yoyi (dances). Participants in these ceremonies are painted with turtiyanginari (different natural ochre colours) in varying designs. These designs transform the dancers and sometimes provide protection against recognition by mapurtiti (spirits).

Freda Warlapinni's artwork is deeply rooted in this cultural heritage, capturing the essence of Tiwi ceremonial practices. Her use of natural ochres and traditional designs highlights the rich history and significance of Tiwi art, making 'Jilamara 1999' a valuable and collectible piece.
