Product Details

Jinung by Mignonette Jamin is a beautiful example of Kimberley work, painted with natural ochre and pigment on canvas.

The artist statement: "Jinung is that big hill beside Kimoorl - the Fitzmaurice River. That's Biddy Simon's country. That hill goes all the way to the saltwater. My country is on the other side of the river where all the mulgnin - spinifex grows. In the old days we used to cross the river on a log from my country to Biddy's country."

Mignonette was born at Muthanoongamaya – Majalindy Valley on Majalindy Creek a tributary of the Fitzmaurice River near Palumpa in the Northern Territory. She was a respected law woman and as a child and young woman walked all over the country from Bullo River to Kununurra. She lived at Legune Station and went to school at Port Keats. She came to Kununurra when she was about 10 years old.

Mignonette painted her traditional country – the rivers and billabongs, coastal areas, the hills, rocky ridges, roads and other land marks as well as sites significant to women’s business which belonged to her dreaming for country at Majalindy. She also painted country around Kununurra and Wyndham associated with her husband’s country – Carlton Hill Station area.

Despite working strictly with ochre pigments, her paintings have a powerful composition and vibrant immediacy that attract many admirers.

Mignonette sadly passed in 2010
