"Kulkurda, 2007" by Adam Butler depicts his grandfather's country of Kulkurda. The waterways, rockholes, sandhills and rocky outcrops are shown in the colours of the Western Desert region in the Tjukurrpa style still used in Ceremonial sand and body painting.
Adam Butler is a member of a family well-known in the Western Desert region. He was born at Papunya on 23 January 1970 and lived in Kintore and Kiwirrikurra communities before moving to Tjukurla where he has lived for a long time since.
Tjukurla is a small outstation township south of Docker River in Western Australia. There, a strong and cultural significant art centre, Tjarlirli Arts represents artists that settled back in their homelands here in the 1980's leaving other members of their family in Kintore and Kiwikurra. Their paintings align to Papunya Tula style. Adam is considered one of the key emerging artists from this region.
