Product Details

"Lake Mackay, 2000" by Walala Tjapaltjarri is a striking work depicting the salt and clay pans along with freshwater soakages of Lake MacKay, located on the border of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Set against a rich red background, the white and black rectangles are skillfully juxtaposed to create a powerful visual impact.

In 1984, Walala and his brother, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, made headlines when they emerged from the desert with their family. Known as "The Pintupi Nine," they had lived a traditional, nomadic lifestyle at Lake MacKay, isolated from European contact until then. This story of cultural endurance captivated the world, labeling them as "The Last of the Nomads."

Walala began his artistic journey in 1997, guided by his brother, an internationally renowned painter. Initially, Walala painted in the classical Tingari style but soon developed his own distinct visual language. His work intricately maps out both physical and spiritual landscapes, including sacred sites like Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay), Maruwa, Yarrawamgi, Tarrku, and Nyami. These locations are integral to the Tingari ancestors' journeys during the Creation Era, when they sang the world into existence.

Today, Walala Tjapaltjarri is celebrated as a successful artist and cultural figure, with his artwork providing an intimate look into the sacred topography and spiritual heritage of his people.
