Product Details

"Nakarra Nakarra, 2008" by Kathleen Paddoon Napanangka, a senior Law woman and a custodian of the Nakarra Nakarra (Seven Sisters Dreaming) songs and ceremonies from the country south of Yaka Yaka, country south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. In her formative years Kathleen walked around the country south of Yaka Yaka with her mother, father, brother and uncle.

This country is one of the sites of the Seven Sisters Dreaming, a story about seven sisters who travel the ancestral landscape during the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) running from an old man who wanted to marry the youngest. Today at Nakarra Nakarra a group of hills embody the seven sisters.

The red sections of this painting represent the hills while the white blocks of colour are the tali (sandhills).

Kathleen Paddoon (also spelt Padoon) was born c1938 and passed away in 2019. A highly regarded artist and printmaker she has exhibited widely and her artwork is in many collections, including the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Provenance of this painting is from Warlayirti Artists, Balgo #377/08
