Product Details

Ngalyipi,2011, by esteemed Aboriginal artist Judy Watson Napangardi, brings to life with vibrant and bold colours a profound Dreaming story of the Napanangka/Napangardi kinship group. At the heart of this piece is ngalyipi (Tinospora smilacina), a sacred vine with immense practical and ceremonial significance for Warlpiri women in Central Australia.

Traditionally, ngalyipi was used as a strap to carry wooden bowls ( coolamons ) filled with food or babies. Its ceremonial importance is equally remarkable, as women wove its fibre with human hair to craft hairstring belts. These belts, often created during mourning rituals, symbolized respect and remembrance for deceased family members, highlighting its role in sacred cultural practices.

Judy Watson Napangardi was born at Yarungkanji (Mt. Doreen Station) and spent much of her life traversing her ancestral lands, including Mina Mina and Yingipurlangu, on the border of the Tanami and Gibson Deserts. Her nomadic lifestyle was sustained by bush foods like yakajirri (bush tomatoes), wanakiji (bush plums), and wardapi (sand goanna).

Taught by her elder sister, Maggie Napangardi Watson, Judy refined her unique artistic style while working with Warlukurlangu Artists. Her focus on Mina Mina Dreaming reflects her deep cultural roots and connection to her heritage. Judy’s bond with her cousin and sister, Dorothy Napangardi, another acclaimed artist, further enriched her art, steeped in Warlpiri storytelling and traditions.

Recognised in 2007 as one of Australia’s 50 most collectible artists by Australian Art Collector , Judy’s works are celebrated in major collections worldwide. Ngalyipi, 2011, exemplifies her legacy, weaving cultural depth with artistic innovation, and solidifying her status as a leading figure in contemporary Aboriginal art.
