Jurrukukuni (Boobook Owl) by Matthew Freddy Puruntatameri
"Jurrukukuni (Boobook Owl)" is the Owl Dance depicted in this striking painting by Matthew Freddy Puruntatameri, using natural ochres on arches paper. Beautifully executed, there is both a formality and a freedom to this work. The art of the Tiwi Islands is often derived from the artist's personal jilamara, painted with natural ochre onto bark, canvas, or sculpture. This has resulted in a culture where self-expression is admired, and each artist develops their own unique aesthetic within the traditional practice, with an emphasis on good design. Creating beautiful art is part of Tiwi culture and has been recognized by the many important institutions and collections worldwide.
Born on February 20, 1972, on Melville Island in the Tiwi Islands, Matthew Freddy Puruntatameri began painting on canvas in the 1980s at Jilamara Art Centre. Encouraged by his father, Paddy Freddy Puruntatameri, Matthew started focusing on carvings and painting in 1988. He completed a diploma in art and craft. Both he and his younger brother Patrick have exhibited extensively throughout Australia, with work held in international collections. They have an outstanding reputation as leading Tiwi artists. Matthew's skin group is Pandanus, his dance is Jurrukukuni (Boobook Owl), and his country is Munupi. His work reflects the rich traditions and vibrant culture of the Tiwi Islands, making a significant impact on the global art scene.
