"Pamarr '08" by Sonia Kurarra is a captivating depiction of palm trees and pamarr (rocks) lining the river behind Yakanarra. This vibrant painting beautifully captures the essence of the Yakanarra community, located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Fitzroy Crossing, near the St Georges Ranges. Yakanarra holds traditional and sacred significance for the Walmajarri People.

Since its inception, Yakanarra has grown from a population of two to a thriving community of 150 Indigenous men, women, and children. The primary purpose of the community is to allow Indigenous people to practice traditional cultural activities. Additionally, it provides a safe and healthy living environment away from the town.

The streets of Yakanarra are named after Walmajarri words, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the area. Examples include:

  • Nyinyijarti: Small bird
  • Jurnta: Bush onion
  • Jilji: Sand hills
  • Mangunampi: Spring water country

Explore the cultural and natural beauty of Yakanarra through "Pamarr '08" and discover the deep connections of the Walmajarri People to their land.

Painting provenance: Mangkaja Arts, Fitzroy Crossing, WA.
