Julie Nangala Robertson, winner of the 2023 Telstra Aboriginal Art Award in the Best Painting Category, captures the essence of Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) in her 2005 piece, "Pirlinyanu Site - Water Dreaming." This artwork depicts rain falling on the rocky outcrop and rock holes of Pirlinyanu, a significant site in the Tanami Desert, west of Yuendumu and near the WA border.

Pirlinyanu is her father's country, and the painting reflects the traditional knowledge passed down through generations about the location of deep rock holes. These rock holes are vital water sources, retaining water even during dry periods.

Robertson's art utilizes a distinctive monochromatic palette and varying dot sizes, creating an aerial perspective that beautifully represents the movement and impact of rain on the landscape. Her dedication to preserving her cultural heritage and storytelling through art is evident in this work.

Recently, Julie Nangala Robertson, the eldest of Dorothy Napangardi Robinson's five daughters, changed the spelling of her surname from Robinson to Robertson. She believes her father, Windy, misspelled it, and this adjustment aligns her surname with her relatives in Yuendumu. Robertson's work and personal journey solidify her importance in the Aboriginal art community.

Painting will be freighted stretched canvas on frame with MDF board for protection
