"Pirlinyanu site - Water Dreaming, 2006" by Julie Nangala Robertson is a magnificent painting that highlights Julie's artistic prowess, earning her the Best Painting category award at the Telstra Aboriginal Art Award in August 2023.

Julie uses a distinctive monochromatic palette to represent the arid country and water, creating a minimalist aerial perspective of the landscape. This work can be viewed in different orientations, showcasing its versatility and depth.

The painting is a significant part of the Water Dreaming (Ngapa Jukurrpa), depicting the rocky outcrop known as Pirlinyanu in the Tanami Desert, west of Yuendumu and near the Western Australia border. Pirlinyanu is known for its significant waterholes and abundant bush tucker. The site offers a panoramic view, revealing a landscape that is far from featureless.

Julie’s intricate knowledge of the land is evident in her work, as she illustrates how moving certain rocks reveals fresh water in the deep natural wells of Pirlinyanu—an essential survival skill in the desert.

As the eldest of five daughters of Dorothy Napangardi Robinson, Julie recently changed her surname to Robertson, aligning with her other relatives in Yuendumu. Her father, Windy, had initially misspelled it when he first moved to Alice Springs in the mid 1980's.. Julie’s painting not only showcases her artistic talent but also her deep connection to her cultural heritage and the natural landscape
