"Salt" by Dorothy Napangardi is a limited edition etching that intricately captures the natural salt crust formations surrounding soakages at Mina Mina, a significant women’s ceremonial site in the Tanami Desert near Lake Mackay. As the water recedes, these salt formations create striking and unique patterns, reflecting the beauty and spiritual essence of Napangardi's custodial country.
Part of a limited edition suite of three etchings, each piece in the set can be sold separately. Together, they depict various topographical and sacred elements of Mina Mina, showcasing Napangardi's deep connection to her ancestral land.
This etching was created as part of a special collaboration between Napangardi and Crown Point Press (CPP). Senior printmaker Dena Schuckit traveled from San Francisco to work with Napangardi in Australia, following a recommendation from artist Belinda Fox, who recognized Napangardi’s talent after her 2001 Telstra National Aboriginal Art Award win. With support from Roslyn Premont and Lotte Waters of Gallery Gondwana, Napangardi completed this highly collectible series.
Etching DN-17 is a limited edition of 50, with a paper size of 22.2 cm x 22.8 cm and image size of 12 cm x 10.1 cm, printed on Somerset Satin White paper and is a stunning testament to Napangardi’s artistic brilliance.
