Maralngurra has followed the footsteps of his father, Gabriel, who is renowned for his work with ochre on paper, skilfully maintaining traditional rock art forms while integrating innovative techniques. His artistic practice, since its inception, has been characterised by a wide range of subjects, fluent linework, and highly original compositions. Many of his paintings aim to draw the attention of non-Indigenous viewers, raising awareness of his culture's existence and significance.
The artistic style of the Kunwinjku people from Western Arnhem Land strongly reflects traditional rock art influences. Maralngurra reimagines these themes into narratives that blend intense emotions such as yearning, passion, supernatural elements, and retribution. Through his artwork, Maralngurra seeks to preserve the tradition and practice of painting in Arnhem Land, ensuring it is passed down to younger generations.
As an artist, Maralngurra's oeuvre covers a diverse range of subjects, including ancestral stories, flora and fauna, and scenes depicting the early interactions between colonisers and Aboriginal people. He employs innovative techniques to pass down the stories, traditions, and practices of his culture, expressing his deep relationship with the natural world.
Maralngurra is represented by Injalak Arts in Oenpelli, Western Arnhemland, NT.
