This natural ochres on stringbark was painted in September 1993 by Traditional Elder Buthimang Dhurrkay and depicts the reef fish in the waters of Elcho Island.
Buthimang Dhurrkay is a respected traditional elder of the Wangurri clan from the remote northeast Arnhem Land region of Galiwinku on Elcho Island. Following in his father's footsteps, he served as a pastor of the Uniting Church at Galiwinku in Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land.
Buthimang Dhurrkay's work and leadership have significantly contributed to the preservation and promotion of Wangurri and Yolngu cultural traditions. As a traditional elder and pastor, he has played a vital role in both the spiritual and cultural life of his community. Through Elcho Island Arts, his contributions help sustain the cultural practices and artistic expressions of his people, ensuring their continued vitality and relevance in the modern world
