Wangarra, 2001 bark painting by Gary Smith Wangarra, 16x48cm

This bark painting titled "Wangarra" is the term for "ghost spirit". These ghost spirits are often depicted with a design painted on their chest infilled with rarrk ‘cross-hatching’, the same designs that are painted onto japi an-guyinda ‘male initiations’.

Painted with ochre pigments with PVC fixative on stringybark ( Eucalyptus tetradonta ).
