"Pirlinyanu Site - Water Dreaming" by Julie Nangala Robertson illustrates her Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming), linked to her father’s traditional country of Pirlinyanu. This rocky outcrop in the Tanami Desert, west of Yuendumu and towards the WA border, is significant for its waterholes and abundant bush tucker.

The region's deep natural wells provide fresh water if you know which rocks to move. Without this knowledge, the desert landscape appears devoid of water. Ownership of this country is patrilineal, passed from father to child, while ritual knowledge is transmitted from aunt to niece (father’s sisters), specifically those in the Nampijinpa and Nangala sub-section groups.

Using an aerial perspective and a distinctive monochromatic palette, Julie’s paintings achieve extraordinary optical brilliance. She alternates dot sizes throughout her work, building specific shapes and reference points through repeated over-dotting.

Julie Nangala Robertson, formerly known as Julie Nangala Robinson, won the prestigious Telstra Aboriginal Art Award in the Best Painting category in August 2023. She recently changed her surname to Robertson to align with family members in Yuendumu, correcting a misspelling by her father, Windy. Windy had two wives, Julie's mother Dorothy Napangardi Robinson, and Rene Robinson.

Julie's work reflects her deep connection to her cultural heritage and the natural landscape, preserving and celebrating the traditions and stories of her ancestors through her remarkable paintings.
