Water and Wanampi Snake Dreaming, 2007 by Jorna Nelson Napurrurla: A Cultural and Artistic Tribute

"Water and Wanampi Snake Dreaming, 2007" by Jorna Nelson Napurrurla showcases the classic iconography of Water and Snake Dreaming. The sinuous lines converging towards the central concentric circles represent the Water Dreaming, while the lines on either side depict Wanampi, the Rainbow Snake, a significant creator in Aboriginal mythology.

The Rainbow Serpent, a revered Dreamtime spirit, is closely associated with water. It travels between waterholes and can move within rain clouds, embodying the guardian of vital water sites. Aboriginal people hold the Rainbow Serpent in great respect due to its considerable powers, capable of summoning storms, thunder, lightning, flooding rain, and driving winds.

In Aboriginal culture, communicating with the Rainbow Serpent when approaching a waterhole signals friendly intentions and ensures the conservation and protection of these crucial sites.

Jorna Nelson Napurrurla, born circa 1928-32, married late in life to Paddy Lewis Japanangka (Dorothy Napangardi's father). She was related to senior law woman Peggy Poulson Napurrula and Lorna Nelson and lived between Yuendumu and Nyrripi where she sadly passed away in 2011. Jorna contributed richly to her cultural heritage through her art..
