Women's Ceremony - Sandhill Country by Nancy Ross Nungurrayi, 91x91cm 6654NN

This painting intricately narrates the journeys of the Tingari law women as they travel from one site to another, depicted by concentric circles, singing the world into existence during the Creation Era (Tjukurrpa). Women of the Nungurrayi subsection skin group perform ceremonies in their honour in sandhill country, represented by the central iconography.

Nancy often features body paint designs used in women's ceremonies in her artwork. Her work is characterized by a beautiful fluidity and gestural quality.

Nancy Nungurrayi, a highly respected Western Desert artist, was born in 1935. Until the assimilation period in the mid-to-late '60s, she lived a traditional lifestyle northwest of Kintore with her sister Naata Nungurrayi and extended family at Maya, where she was born, and later at Wala Wala, west of the Kiwirrkura Community.
