Yalpirakinu 2006 by Adrian Jangala Robertson captures the majestic landscape of his mother’s Country, Yalpirakinu (also known as Yuelamu), through dynamic brushstrokes of oil on board. Utilising a rich colour palette dominated by deep, vibrant reds, Robertson masterfully portrays the desert mountains, their ridges steeped in earthy tones. The emerald greens and purples used to depict the trees and vegetation in the foreground contrast vividly against the bright, desert-blue sky, creating a striking sense of depth and texture.
Robertson’s deep personal connection to Yalpirakinu, located northwest of Mparntwe (Alice Springs), is the focal point of this artwork. It serves as an homage to his mother, Eunice Napangardi, a respected artist in her own right, and evokes memories of family and heritage. Robertson’s bold, energetic brushwork reflects the influence of his mentor, Billy Benn Perrurle, while his recent experimentation with framing the landscape evokes a sense of looking out onto the land as if through a window.
Born in Papunya in 1962, Robertson has been a key figure at Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists since 2002, with his work recognised through finalist positions in prestigious Australian art prizes such as the Archibald, Sulman, and Wynne Prizes.
