Jila Well Dreaming (2003)
Rachel Napaltjarri was born near Jila Well in the Western Desert in Central Australia. She has been painting since 1985 when she attended painting classes at the Institute of Aboriginal Development in Alice Springs. Her Jukurrpa (Dreaming totems) are the Green Parrot, Pirki (Cave), Yarla and Kangaroo.
This painting depicts the country surrounding Jila Well. The concentric circles depict the camp sites while women represented by the U-shapes gather for ceremony. The interlinking lines represent the flow of water between the sites. The background iconography depicts the country and in particular the small wooden sticks Rachel and her family collected for firewood.
