Dorothy Napangardi would often experiment on smaller scale works ' esquisse ', that were exploratory studies on ideas in her head. Often, they would be preliminary studies before larger works.
In this example of 'sandhills' Dorothy uses her minimalist colour palette to depict the movement of sand across the dunes. The stylisation of the work directs the viewer forwards and backwards across the space and evokes a feminine touch in the placement of the dots.
