"Sandhills Etching" by Dorothy Napangardi is a mesmerizing limited edition artwork that beautifully captures the dynamic movement of sandhills across her ancestral country. The flowing patterns in this piece evoke the constant shifting of the landscape, reminiscent of wind-etched tracks in the sand, creating a sense of motion that moves back and forth like ripples across a desert.
This etching is part of a series of nine etchings created in collaboration with Crown Point Press (CPP). The project was led by CPP's senior printmaker Dena Schuckit, who travelled from San Francisco to work directly with Napangardi in Australia. The collaboration was initiated by fellow artist Belinda Fox, who recognised Napangardi's immense talent after her 2001 Telstra National Aboriginal Art Award win. With the support of Fox and Schuckit, this iconic series was born. Gallery Gondwana's Roslyn Premont and Lotte Waters accompanied Napangardi to San Francisco to finalise and sign off on the project.
Produced in 2004, the etching uses colour soap ground and sugar lift aquatints, with an image size of 45 x 60 cm and paper size of 65 x 78 cm, printed on Somerset Satin White paper. This limited edition of 50, created by Crown Point Press, is a coveted collector’s item, showcasing Napangardi’s exceptional artistry and connection to her cultural heritage. Collectors of Indigenous Australian art highly value this stunning piece for its cultural depth and artistic mastery.
