Product Details
Barney Campbell Tjakamarra, born around 1928, was a distinguished Ngaayatjarra and Pintupi elder, known for his profound contributions to Indigenous Australian art. A respected Law Man from the Kintore region near Lake MacDonald in the Northern Territory, Tjakamarra's work primarily focuses on the Tingari Cycle. This significant subject in his paintings depicts sites where young boys underwent initiation ceremonies.

The Tingari Cycle involves the sacred and secret rituals of the Dreaming creation era, performed by the Tingari men, who traveled vast distances shaping and creating sites. These men, accompanied by novices and followed by Tingari women, have their journeys and adventures immortalized in song cycles. These stories are essential for post-initiatory teachings and understanding contemporary customs.

Tjakamarra's art, created while singing to the Ancestors in his native Pintupi/Luritja language, captures these creation stories and the cultural laws they impart. His paintings are treasured in several prominent collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Barney Campbell Tjakamarra passed away in 2006, leaving behind a rich legacy in Indigenous art and cultural preservation.
