Winparrku and Kunamanarra, 2011 by Cindy Nakamarra Gibson
In "Winparrku and Kunamanarra," Cindy Nakamarra Gibson portrays the lush landscape after rain, with wildflowers in full bloom. The painting highlights two significant sites in the western desert: Kunamanarra, a low ridge rock face with a native well, and Winparrku, a round table-top hill. These locations hold deep personal significance for Cindy and her mother, renowned artist Mitjili Napanangka Gibson.
Cindy Nakamarra Gibson, born in 1967, belongs to the Warlpiri/Pintupi language group. She was primarily raised in the central desert community of Yuendumu. Cindy's mother, Mitjili, imparted a wealth of traditional law and cultural knowledge, having lived a traditional life near Winparrku. Known for her expertise in plant and animal knowledge and as an expert hunter, Mitjili often accompanied scientists on expeditions to locate endangered species. This profound love for the land was passed on to Cindy.
Cindy's paintings inherit her mother's passion for vibrant colours and textures, radiating energy and life. Now residing in Alice Springs with her husband, children, and grandchildren, Cindy continues to celebrate her rich cultural heritage through her dynamic artwork. Her paintings are a testament to her deep connection to her ancestral land and traditions.
